Peter: Update 3
Dawn phoned last night.
The news is positive (yay!). Yesterday they managed to wake Peter out of the induced coma. Not before having to do that tracheotomy thingee. Prior he was pulling at all the tubes down his throat. I would think that’s fairly common. Imagine waking up to the sensation of something in your throat preventing you from swallowing or breathing as you last remembered.
Anyway Dawn hadn’t been to the hospital on Wednesday. She said it had all gotten too much for her and she needed some breathing space. She wasn’t sure about going yesterday but had phoned the hospital very early and they’d said he was out of the coma.
Peter’s sister visited and he appeared to be aware she was there. He would squeeze her hand.
He’s unable to speak due to the thing in his neck helping him breath (though he is breathing much better and doesn’t need to be assisted all the time).
At first the nurses asked him to poke his tongue out as an affirmative when they asked him questions. And this worked. So he’s alert. Oh, he has bruising on his brain which they found during a subsequent CT scan.
A nurse asked if he knew why he was there. No tongue poking out.
As is normal I suspect he’s blocked it out. That’s my uneducated guess.
Dawn’s parents also visited during the day (Dawn’s back at work) and he acknowledged them too.
Dawn got up last night. The nurses had moved him to a private room, still in Intensive Care – to help reduce all the activities around him that they think were causing some of the aggression.
She held his hand and spoke to him. He tried to give her a hug. However his shoulder is broken and so he’d screw his face up in pain and mouth (FUCK).
Dawn said he’s been mouthing it quite a bit, obviously due to the pain he’s in and having done something, like cough, that’s intensified the pain.
The kids haven’t been to see him since he’s awake, the nurses suggested not to yet. Peter’s no longer being sedated, just on pain killers.
He must be in an enormous amount of pain. The cough wouldn’t have helped his lungs that’s for sure.
The upshot is that it’s a good sign that he’s alert, and according to the nurses he’s improved greatly from when they woke him during the morning, until the time Dawn left.
Dawn has a book up there for people who visit to write thoughts. She’s been encouraging the nurses to participate too.
One of the nurses said she’s going to write that she liked Peter better as a patient when he was in the coma
So far he’s destroyed the monitor that’s attached to his toe, it reads oxygen or something. They’re not cheap, and he’s ruined 5 of them by managing to flick them off his foot across the room.
It’ll be a very slow recovery. But this is the best news they’ve had to date.
